Making an Impact 2018 Highlights

Collaborating to Solve the Rural Health Crisis

Where we live plays a big role in our ability to achieve our best health. For many Texans, that’s partly because they must travel long distances for primary care and other vital health care services. We’re working with experts at Texas A&M University to explore innovative solutions to the rural health care crisis in our state.

Investing in Community Partners to Improve Health

We invested more than $2.8 million in our community partners in 2018. Through Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® grants, we’re targeting chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder — conditions that impact quality of life for many Texans. One grant recipient, for example, is helping San Angelo residents address CKD early.

Bridging Gaps in Preventive Care

Having to travel long distances to see doctors and other barriers to care affect our health and well-being. The Care Van® mobile health program brings preventive care directly to people who need it. In 2018, the vans helped deliver vaccinations and other services to more than 59,000 Texans. In June 2018, the Caring Foundation of TexasSM rolled out 5 Care Vans.

Addressing Food Insecurity

Many things besides medical care — like housing, transportation and food access — play a role in health and well-being. In 2018, we worked with Feeding America to support 15 food banks and other organizations to help eliminate food insecurity. Our partners reported distributing 1.8 million pounds of food, benefitting more than 845,000 Texans.

Making Connections in Our Communities

In 2018, our employees recorded nearly 41,000 hours of service with 695 organizations across Texas. Our Volunteer of the Year, Adam Quintanilla, works with the Boots on the Ground ministry of his church to build wheelchair ramps on homes of elderly and disabled residents in Abilene.
